Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1.4 IGHT van wen whose vehicles are always prone to the troubles associated wit. pneumatic tyres, such as punctures, will welcome the appearance of the Baxter-Mellor detachable un puncturable tyre tread. The tyre tread, which is the invention of Mr. Charles Baxter, A.M.I.A.E., A.M.I.Mech.E., and Dr. Mellor, and is patented, consists of a casing of non-puricturabletmaterial, so shaped as to enclose a detachable tread and part of the existing cover. This fits the tyre tAghtiv and is put on .whilstathe latter is deflated, being rigidly held in position when the tyre is blown up to its working pressure. The casing is formed with slots oa openings;•through which projections on the;troad protrude, these projections being free to move up • or down in the slots as and when they receive the weight of the vehicle. It will thus be seen that all the road wear is taken not by the cover in the ordinary -way, but by a cheap and easily renewable tread, which greatly increases the life of the cover and renders it, it is claimed, entirely puncture proof without interfering in any way with the pneumatic principle.

• The casing, besides acting as a guide for the projections, also greatly strengthens the cover by relieving it of many stresses and strains which it has hitherto had to bear unsupported.

This description presents the device in its simplest form, as it can, of course, be incorporated with the cover during manufacture, or 'used on old or worn" i covers, and n a slightly different form applied to such heavy vehicles as traction engines_ It should be noted that if the tyre loses its pressure for any reason the studs recede so fax that the casing gives instant warning by coming into contact with the road, In practice a casing is made for each size of cover, the only variation needed being detachable treads of different thicknesses to allow for various patterns on" the tyres to which they are intended to be fitted..

• The device is simple, and, it is said, can be .easily fitted. The inventors would be glad to hear from concerns with the necessary manufacturing facilities to turn it out in sufficient quantities. Communications should be sent to Mr. O'Connell, patent agent, Barton Arcade, Manchester.
