THE TRANSPORT & General Workers Union is talking to trailer manufacturer Montracon in a bid to prevent 70 people being made redundant at its Derbyshire plant.
Montracon directors are tightlipped over speculation that a shortage of orders will force them to close the Woodville plant by the end of February 2006. But Phil Barley, the T&G's regional industrial organiser,says:"We are in consultation with [Montracon] and discussing issues on a local level.., we are always optimistic, but it doesn't look too good for us."
Barley adds the union is "firming up" a meeting with directors at the south Derbyshire business for 'Thursday (10 November).
Montracon is controlled by Northern Irish holding company Ballyvesey Holdings, which also owns Northern Irish operator Montgomery Transport.
Its last accounts filed at Companies House show Montracon made a pre-tax profit of f 1.8min 2004 on a £60.7m turnover. This compared with a 12.5m loss in 2003 on a £53.9m turnover. The workforce was cut from 647 to 606 last year.
Montracon also has plants in Doncaster, Market Weighton and Northern Ireland.
