Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A LTHOIJGH a comparative new

tcomer to the commercial-vehicle industry, the Rover Co. has an interesting exhibit. At one end of the scale is a 12 h.p. six-cylinder-engined ambulance costing £345, whilst at the other end comes a 5-cwt, van mounted on the Scarab rear-engined chassis, the complete vehicle being priced at £99 10s.

The ambulance incorporates the main features of the recently introduced Pilot chassis, in which a six-cylindered engine equipped with overhead valves is used. The chassis specification includes a single-plate clutch, a four-forward-speed gearbox with a silent-third speed, worm final drive and internal-expanding brakes in the drums of all four wheels. With wheelbase and track dimensions of 8 ft. 8 ins. and 4 ft. 2 ins, respectively, the chassis is quite large enough to carry a roomy single-stretcher ambulance body built by Cross and Ellis, Ltd.

• More than .ordinary interest attaches to the design of the Scarab light delivery van, for the V-twin-cylindered engine (840 c.c.) is mounted at the rear of the vehicle in company with the

whole of the transmission line. Actually, the engine, clutch, gearbox and final drive are all built into a single casting which forms the body of the unit. The air-cooled cylinders are bolted to this main casting and are surmounted by inclined overhead valves.

Lubrication is by pressure from a pump forcing oil to all the bearings in the unit A central change-speed lever operates the three-speed-and-reverse gearbox and the single-plate clutch is coupled up to the pedal in the normal way, whilst the independent springing of both front and rear wheels makes for comfortable travel, also for low maintenance costs.

The wheelbase and track dimensions of 6 ft. 6 ins. and 3 ft. 6 ins, respectively are large enough to allow quite a good-sized body to be fitted.

As the engine compartment is at the rear the body is schemed to provide side loading; this arrangement is very convenient as it enables the driver to load and unload without incurring the risk of opening a rear door across a traffic stream. The distinctive appearance of this van is bound to have a definite publicity value.

• Costing £155 and £160 respectively, the 10-25h.p. drop-side lorry and Economy van appear to be workmanlike little vehicles. The inside dimensions of the lorry body are 6 ft. by 5 ft. ; a coachbuilt cab with two doors fitted with wind-up glass windows, a sprung driver's seat and back rest are also to be found in both the lorry and van specifications. These vehicles incorporate four-cylindered • engines. The chassis weight is 121 cwt. and the loadcarrying capacity is 10 cwt—Rover Co., Ltd., Coventry.
