Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MIMED examples of the Maudslay 1 company's well-known six-cylinderengined models are on view, together with a four-cylinder-engined chassis carrying 32-seater single-deck-bus bodywork. The six-cylinderecl models are, respectively, the Meteor (of which two are shown), having a 17-ft. 6-in, wheelbase, and the Majestic double-deck chases, with a 16-ft. 6-in. wheelbase. Additionally there is the rigid-frame sixwheeler of the trailing-axle type intended to carry 12 tons.

Passenger types incorporate the wellknown six-cylindered Maudslay power unit, which is thoroughly up to date and highly efficient The principal item of interest, of course, is the fact that the combustion chambers are almost perfectly hemispherical in shape, the valves, inclined at 90 degrees to each other, being operated by rocker arms through the medium of two separate camshafts, each of which is mounted in the cylinder block immediately below the head joint. In this way the cylinder heads can be removed for decarbonization without disturbing the timing of camshafts. It is interesting to note that the cylinders are formed by inserting centrifugally cast renewable "wet" liners into the aluminium casting, which comprises the crankcase and the cylinder jackets.

Two separate pressure-fed oil systems are included in the specification, one supplying the main bearings of the crankshaft, whilst the other leads the lubricant to the camshafts and valve rockers. Water circulation is by centrifugal pump, whilst ignition is supplied by a magneto. The bore and stroke dimensions of 110 mm. and 130 ram. are sufficient to allow 120 b.h.p. to be developed.

Planned on more or less orthodox lines, the transmission is of a robust and sturdy nature. A single-plate clutch and a four-forward-speed gearbox are mounted unitwise with the engine, the drive thereafter being conveyed to an underslung worm-type rear axle. One of the 31-seaters has a coach body by London Lorries, Ltd., with flexible sliding Plein Azar roof; an emergency door is incorporated in the rear panel.

The 52-seater double-deck chassis has a very similar specification to the chassis already described, but in this particular vehicle the bodywork is by Christopher Dodson, Ltd. ; it incorporates a Plein Azar sliding roof in the upper saloon.

The four cylinder engined chassis utilizes a 16-ft. 0i-in. wheelbase. Similar bore and stroke dimensions are used in the engine as in the six-cylindered model; the overhead valves, however, are directly operated by extra wide cams. The cylinders are east en bloc and the cylinder head is, of course detachable. A leather-faced cone clutch and a four-speed gearbox, with left-hand control, convey the power to an underslung-worm-type rear axle via an open propeller shaft. As shown, this vehicle is replete with a 32-seater single-deckbus body by Willowbrook, Ltd.—Maudslay Motor Co., Ltd., Parkside, Coventry.
