• Fears that the Single European Market after 1992 would cause a "lorry mountain" (CM 22-28 March) have led the
European Commission to unveil measures which could ruin the entire SEM, says PIA director-general Garry Turvey.
"There is no need for quantity restrictions on access to the market," he says. "No need for imposed price controls. No reason why any mode of freight transport needs protection or financial support. No need for market monitoring or government attempts to distort the market. That is how we run our freight transport — and it works."
