A VEHICLE for collection and ri delivery to supplement a trunk service operated by two vehicles could not be justified, Mr. A. J. F. Wrottesley, for the British Transport Commission, told Mr. J. R. Lindsay, North "Western Deputy Licensing Authority, on Monday. The B.T.C. objected to an application by . Tirnperley Coachways, Timperley, for a B licencefor a pantechnicon.

Mr. H. Robinson, for the applicants, said that, two of their A-licensed vehicles were employed upon a nightly trunk service between Manchester and London. A Vehicle was required for collection and delivery within eight miles of base, because of—the difficulty of hiring transport. The other Alicensed vehicle owned by the firm was fully employed on furniture removals and other day-time work.

Mr. Wrottesley submitted that there was no case to answer. The applicants had produced no figures of split deliveries, and the Transport Tribunal had indicated .that in such cases evidence had to be precise. Many. of the hiring difficulties encountered bY'the applicants had been caused by fuel rationing.

Mr. Lindsay refused the aPplication, saying that it was tbCi ambitious, considering the size of the long-distance fleet concerned.

0.S. MAP FOR OPERATORS

TH E first sheet of a new series of maps covering the whole of Great Britain has been published by the Ordnance Survey. It shows North Wales and Lancashire, and although intended for drivers, it would seem to be more suitable, because of the absence of an index to places, as a wall map for use in the offices of transport operators.

Clarity and wealth of detail are up to the standard expected of the Ordnance Survey, and the map is sold flat

• at 3s., or folded at 5s. A folded linenmounted edition costs 7s. The scale is approximately four miles to the inch. .Dimensions of the flat map are 2 ft. 6 in. by 3 ft. wide. Publication of the full set of maps' will take six years.
