Hanbury Riverside has just taken delivery of a batch of X-registered Scania R114 380 6x2s dating back to 2000."We're offering them at around £22,000 each, and we're willing to pay the 10% deposit on them ourselves on behalf of creditworthy customers," says director Lee Smith.

"If you need to put five vehicles on the road to service a contract then it's a cheap way of doing it.

"Not all jobs can support a brand-new 460hp unit, and not everybody runs at maximum weight all the time," he adds. "The Scanias are ideal for companies that run mostly at 38 or 40 tonnes with just the occasional run at 44 tonnes. and that happens to be on short to medium distance work.

"They should also suit operators who are operating old tackle and spending a fortune on maintenance, but can't run to something really expensive, or are just starting out on their own. Hauliers have become a lot sharper and don't buy trucks they can't really afford.They certainly don't go out and buy vehicles on a whim," he says Smith reckons the clinching argument for 380s is their fuel consumption: 'They're averaging 9mpg."

"People are forgetting why they used to buy the R114 380 in the first place and it makes sense to remind them just how economical they are," says Stuart Wolstenholme, used truck sales manager at Scania dealership West Pennine's Middleton, Manchester branch.

"We put an X-plated example on the road as a demonstrator, and sold several on the back of it There are a lot of clean examples around at present."We've been finding homes for eight Y-plated examples going back to 2001, even though they've covered 850.000km each.Two have gone for export but several of the others have already been sold to UK customers."

Matt Hammond, used vehicle sales manager at West Thurrock, Essex dealership Harris Daf, agrees that there's still a market for 380hp units.

"Remember that they're likely to have basically the same engine in them as their more powerful stablemates," he remarks. "The only difference is the mapping."
