THE TWO MAJOR British road haulage groups are unlikely to buy North American haulage companies which Pepsico, the soft drinks giant, has put on the market.
Several buyers are reported to have shown interest in the companies, household removals firm North American Van Lines and interstate cargo carrier Lee Way Motor Freight, whose sale could lead Pepsico to pull out of transport which amounts to about three per cent of its operating profits.
But the National Freight Consortium, whose overseas business activity is confined largely to Australia and the now profitable Downard-Pickfords venture, said it was not interested in the US companies. The Transport Development Group, which has US interests, said it was unlikely to buy the Pepsico firms.
