WEIOLESALE warehouses in the drapery and clothing line are much livelier than they have been for some time. The quantities of goods ordered are small, but the number of parcels is considerable.

North-east Coast.

The leading collieries in Northumberland are booked up with orders to last for some months, and, although in Durham some markets are quieter, there is still a good demand for best steam coal. Ship repairing on the Tyne is more active than it has been for some time.

Messrs. J. H. Ayton, 5, George Street, Blackhill, Co. Durham, are to erect 46 houses on the Front Street site, Led,gate.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

In the cotton trade, orders are increasing in number, if not in size, and a feature of current requirements is insistence on prompt delivery. Business in some of the common acids and in soda products is fairly active in the Widnes and St. Helens aras.

In the leather markets of Manchester, Runcorn, Warrington and Liverpool, the demand for some grades of leather remains good.

Manchester engineering concerns believe that many orders are being held up pending the closing of the B.I.F., and that, after that event, business will improve.

Messrs. II. Fairclough, of Warrington, are to erect a school at Halton Road, Runcorn, and Mark Lane and Co., of Heaton Lane, Stockport, is to build a school in Lisbon Lane, off Dialstone Lane, Stockport. LeadleYs, Ltd., of Askern, is to erect 46 houses and bungalows on a site adjoining Church Street, Swinton.

Yorkshire.

Makers of dress goods in the York shire woollen areas are busy. The safety-razor-blade business, already referred to as good, is now reported to be improving still more. Engineering concerns in Sheffield and district expect a revival of industry as the outcome of placing of naval contracts, and as the result of orders placed at the B.I.F. A new industry, for the making of lacquered-steel strip, has been established by the United Steel Companies,. Ltd., Sheffield.

Messrs. Vincent Knowles and Sons, St. James Street, Hull, are to erect a nurses' home and quarters for sick children at the Victoria Hospital, Hull.

Wakefield T.C. is proposing to build SO houses on the Darnley estate, whilst Bridlington T.C. proposes to construct a further 50 houses. The development committee of Selby has received ins quiries for a 15-acre factory site.

Midlands.

The improvement in the lace trade has now spread to the plain-net section. In the hosiery -factories those which make sports outerwear and women's dresses are most active.

vanized sheets are being received in fair numbers, although individually small as regards tonnage. Hardware manufacturers are already experiencing considerable advantage from the B.I.F._ A slum area in New Summer Street, Birmingham, is to be demolished and replaced by 509 new houses. Gee Walker and Slater, Ltd., is to erect pithead baths at Birch Coppice, Hall End Colliery, near Tan3worth. Messrs. B. Denning, 20, Bloxwich Road, Walsall, are to erect 100 houses at Broadwater, Kidderminster.

H. l3oot and Sons, Ltd., Sheffield, is to build 214 houses on the Priory Estate; Dudley, for the town council. Messrs. A. M. Griffiths and Sons, Thomas Street, Wolverhampton, are to erect 136 houses at Bushbury for Wolverhampton T.C.

'Scotland.

Scottish tweed manufacturers are at last becoming busy. The iron and steel trade in the Glasgow district is steadily improving, largely as the outcome of a welcome increase in shipyard activity.

Wales.

The coal trade in and around Cardiff and Swansea remains active. There is an increasing demand for coal for industrial purposes arising from the revival of the iron, steel and tin-plate trades.

Considerable activity in the building trades may, in the near future, be anticipated in this part of the country ; £460,000 is to be spent on improvements to railway stations and docks, particularly to Cardiff Station and to Swansea Station, West Front.

Messrs. W. Evans and Son, Pentraeth, Anglesey, are to erect a number of houses at Llanddeiniolen for Gw-yrfai R.D.C.

West Country.

Messrs. J. Slanderwiek and Sons of Bridgwater, are to build 48 houses on a site at Westfield, Shepten Mallet, for the urban district council.

London and Home Counties.

In Bermondsey, a fair demand for the cheaper grades of leather is being experienced.

Messrs. W. H. Green and Sons, Trafalgar Road, South Cross, Portslade-by-Sea, will probably erect 44 houses in Middle Road, for Shoreham U.D.C. Messrs. A. E. Fair, 39, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1, are to execute works along the Victoria and Albert Embankments to prevent floods.

Messrs. Cutler and Sysum, of Ledbury, are to erect a number of houses' for Clheltenham T.C., and Messrs. A. Schofield, Scott Green, Gildersome, Leeds are to build 102 houses off Kinson Road, Bournemouth. The Building and Public Construction Works Co., Ltd., is to build a school at Whitley Park, Reading. Messrs. Seaward Bros. are to construct 70 houses at Gardinia Avenue and Limbury Road, Luton.

Plans are on hand for the erection of a factory, near Chichester, for the manufacture of beet sugar. Negotiations are proceeding with farmers for laying down about 10,000 acres of beet in the vicinity.
