Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A mystery oiler has left Brian Weatherley to ponder the meanhig of tabloid journarean and why we aft need to inn hi the present.

The man didn't leave a name; at least not one my answerphone managed to capture. At least I think he came from the West Country, though it might have easily have been East Anglia. Either way he rang up to bemoan CMs 'tabloid' style. If, by that, he meant our desire to boil down complex issues into easily assimilated chunks of information for busy readers then my response is "guilty as charged." And if the word 'tabloid' has come to mean anything other than the above definition I suggest he take it up with Rupert Murdoch.

The caller also said he'd been reading CMfor over 40 years, and it wasn't the same as it used to be. No argument there, but then neither is the industry which it serves. I just wonder if he's noticed.

My mystery caller also took umbrage over the way we'd asked the Tory Shadow Transport Minister for some election pledges (CM 13 May), "just in case the Tories ever win". This was clear proof (if proof were needed) of our bias towards Labour, he said. The fact we gave Damian Green MP two pages to expand on the Tories' agenda, plus a headline story up front, clearly passed him by. As did CM editor Andy Salter's leader in the same issue railing against the Government's policy on fuel tax. But perception is a funny thing. Perhaps he'll call again so I can answer him in person. I do hope so.
