ACLAIM by the Transport sand General Workers' Union for rates of pay and conditions of service as set out in an agreement reached by the Independent Public Service Vehicle Operators' Joint Wages Committee, North Western Area, and the union on February 25 this year has been allowed by the Industrial Disputes Tribunal.

According to the Tribunal's ruling, members of the Morecambe, Heysham and District Coach Owners' Association are required to pay their employees £8 10s, for six or seven days during the 22 weeks beginning with Whitsuntide or June 1, whichever is the earlier, and for the rest of the year, £7 for five or six days, with an additional 11 10s. if the seventh day is worked. The ruling is back-dated to June I this year.

SECRETS OF SUCCESS

REASONS why West Bromwich Transport Department was able to convert a loss of £4,574 in 1951-52 into a profit of £21,563 in the past year have been given by Ald. G. C. W. Jones, chairman of the transport committee.

The policy of purchasing rolling stock out of revenue had been continued since the war, he said, and great savings on loan charges had been effected. He attributed much of the satisfactory running of the undertaking to the efficiency and continuity of management under Mr. Witcomb Smith and his assistant, Mr. W. E. Whitwell, and the loyalty of the " back room boys."

Another factor not sufficiently appreciated was that although originated and owned by West Bromwich, it was not a purely local undertaking, for it served 13 other authorities, including, to some extent, Birmingham.
