COAL LORRYOVERWEIGHT nIFFICULTIES of estimating the

weight of coal loaded on to a lorry by means of a hopper were mentioned to Burton magistrates, last Friday.

John William Murfin, 12 Ash Street, Burton, who was fined £3 for driving a vehicle 1 ton 1 cwt. 1 qr. overweight, told a constable that, when loaded, the coal was wet. The weighbridge, which did not belong to the pit, was half a mile from the pit and, said Murfin, if a load was too heavy, the surplus was not permitted to be removed. There was also no provision for it at the pit.

A. Fletcher and Co., Ltd., Murfin's employers, were fined £5 for permitting the offence.

It was stated that the problem of disposing of surplus coal had now been solved.
