HE SECOND phase of Manhester's city centre pedestrianiation scheme could start next ionth, if Greater Manchester :ouncil pursues its current lans.

Following the pedestrianiseon of Deansgate and part of larket Street from November 3st year, the council now proloses to close the rest of Market ■ treet, St Mary's Gate, and St knne's Square from 10am to .pm, with access outside those lours restricted to servicing inly.

Unlike the earlier phase, this me does not involve any large tores, but the Freight Transport kssociation told CM that it anicipates that there will be probems for premises which do not lave rear access.

The FTA was due to put its thjections to the Council this week, and other objectors were o be heard on January 26.

The Council says it wants the ;cheme to be in operation by =ebruary.
