Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An hydraulically operated universal grinding machine, designed to manufacture shafts and similar work pieces to a high degree of accuracy, is being marketed by Barker Machine Tools and Equipment Ltd. The machine, the Okuma Model GCU, is made in Japan by the Okuma Machinery Works Ltd. Barker holds the exclusive UK marketing rights.

It can be supplied with either a 13in. or 16.9in. swing while the distance between centres can be varied between 18in. and 100in, in six settings. A feature of the machine is that it has a non-concentric type spindle housing with the wheel spindle driven through multiple V belts. The spindle is mounted in a patented mirror-finish journal bearing, the design of which is based on the fluid bearing theory.

The wheel spindle bearings are completely pressure-lubricated by an independent motordriven pump. A protective pressure switch ensures that the motor automatically stops in the event of the oil falling below the normal working level during operation, thus protecting the wheel spindle against damage.

The wheel slide is with a swivel base that moves in a horizontal plane up to 90 deg either side of its normal position. The slide base, which carries the wheel spindle, can also be swivelled to an angle if required and can be adjusted up to 3.54in. (90mm).' This moves along one flat and one V-way, which ensures accurate alignment and full support to the

Three types of wheel feed are vailable, namely automatic / iydraulic/intermittent for traerse grinding, manual-coarse Ind fine-feed. The wheel feed nechanism is operated hydraucally on either both ends or the ight hand end of the table reverse.

The drive to the work spindle ; through V-belts and a twopeed ac. motor is normally sed that provides infinitely varible speeds ranging from 25 to 20 rpm for both dead-centre nd live-spindle grinding. Indivilual motors are used for the xternal grinding wheel spindle, rorkhead, hydraulic oil pump nd grinding fluid pump, all of yhich are enclosed and dynamially balanced to eliminate ibration. The main electrical ontrol box is a separate unit linged to the rear left side of the nachine bed for easy inspection nd maintenance.
