• When Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, appearing on behalf of Larrow Transport (Northern) Ltd. at a public inquiry in Newcastle last Friday, asked for a further adjournment so that Mr. Obrey Davis, who, he had been informed, had been delayed by fog, could attend, the Northern LA, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, refused. He said the two applications had been adjourned from time to time and as there was no evidence that Larrow had acquired a haulage business in respect of either of the two applications, he intended to refuse them.

Larrow Transport of Birtley, Co. Durham. was applying for new A licences to take over those previously held by Davis Bros. (Haulage) Ltd. and C. Bristow Ltd, in connection with, in each case, a 4-ton flat vehicle with a "General goods, Great Britain" condition. British Road Services and British Railways were objecting.

Mr. Campbell Wardlaw said he had received a phone mesage that Mr. Davis was on his way to the inquiry but had been delayed by fog. However, Mr. W. R. Green, Larrow's local manager, was present -to give evidence. Larrow held a public A carrier's licence in the Northern Traffic area for 10 vehicles and, in accordance with the request of the LA's clerk, could produce the drivers' records for the last three years and a list of vehicles being operated.

Mr. Green said he had been employed by Davis Bros. as a driver for a number of years but had left the company when it had gone into liquidation in April 1968, following the appointment of a receiver on January 1 1968. He had later joined Larrow as manager. He conceded that, of the two vehicles Larrow sought to take over, the Davis vehicle had not been taxed since April last and following an accident in August 1967, the Bristow vehicle had been off the road.

Mr. Hanlon said he did not propose to grant another adjournment and refused the application.
