• New zonal fares, approved by Sunderland transport committee to replace the existing flat-rate fare, were brought into operation on January 6. The corporation employees had threatened to refuse to work the new fares unless they received a special bonus for doing so.

a flat rate increase of 12s 6d weekly) was refused by the Prices and Incomes Board, but the transport committee has promised to review the position after the zonal fares have been in use for two months. It is understood that the PIB will reconsider the matter if it is found that the new fare system improves productivity and benefits passengers.
