Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A QUESTION MARK is hanging over VOSA’s ability to target foreign hauliers louting road safety laws after the government delayed signing up to a panEuropean enforcement database over its cost implications.

A European Directive that will help enforcement agencies ind out if a driver has committed a trafic offence in another country could come into force next year. These offences include speeding, failing to stop at a red light, drink-driving and using mobile phones at the wheel.

Malcolm Bingham, Freight Transport Association head of road network management policy, says: “It’s a bit of a problem area for us; we do need crossborder enforcement, particularly on the goods vehicles side where we know VOSA would like to have a better exchange of information so they can pursue those foreign drivers that abscond.” Transport minister Mike Penning says: “While I support greater co-operation between member states over the issue of road safety, we feel that there is still more work to be done. There are questions still to be answered over the costs of such a scheme to the UK.”
