Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The auction houses have started the new year in fine form with January proving profitable for van auctions at British Car Auctions.

The company reported good crowds, strong bidding with healthy prices through the opening month at Blackbushe, Glasgow, Belle Vue and Measham.

UK business development manager Duncan Ward said January saw trade and end-users out in force. "With economic conditions generally good, keeping small business confidence high,we should expect to see demand being maintained certainly into the early part of the year," he says.

The benchmark sector, he adds, is the three-year-old contract hire market which produces high conversion rates and strong price performance borne out of the trade's confidence in the quality of the vehicles.

Since the new year, BCA has seen conversion rates in and around 70°/0.The recent sale at Glasgow saw 100% conversion rates for Lex Vehicle Leasing and Scottish Water, with the Royal Mail selling all bar one of its 31 vehicles.

Overall, however,Ward believes the market is short of good quality, late-year, lowmileage vehicles which is producing strong bidding on those which are available.

The car-derived-van market has grown sharply in the new year turning it into a buyers' market.Warcl says that sellers should be wary of sentimentality and price vehicles to sell.

At the top end of the van spectrum. demand continues for Lutons, dropsides and tippers, with unusual specification or even colour failing to diminish sales. In panel vans engine size matters as the delivery markets are looking for power.Ward underlines that good condition is always the key to a successful sale.
