Services i 11 North

By T. H. Allen,

SO many pitfalls and traps for the unwary exist in the Road Traffic Act that among both licensed and unlicensed operators in the northern area there exists a feeling of uncertainty as to how the various clauses will affect them, and that feeling is making them wary in parchasing new stock, in addition to which garage extensions, et., are temporarily suspended.

Regarding prospects in this area, I am of the opinion that if all the private concerns bind themselves thoroughly together and work to the Act, with certain amendments, there can be no doubt that in a very short space of time, private enterprise will more than hold its own against the gigantic combines controlled by the railways.

The formation of our association_ was rendered necessary by the advent of the Road Traffic Act, to protect the vital interests of private omnibus concerns in the northern area.

We already represent owners of over 400 vehicles which serve places RS far apart as Aberdeen and London, and whilst ours is a fairly strong organization, it could be considerably augmented if the other private owners in the district would join us.

We would then represent 1,000 vehicles, and, as such, would be the largest organization of its kind in England. The benefits to be de

rived from such a merger would be manifold. Overlapping and direct private opposition would be entirely obviated, labour-saving devices and accessories could be purchased in such large quantities that enormous reductions in cost would be obtained.

Private commercial enterprise placed England in the position she held in 1913. It is the colossal industrial combines and monopolies that have brought us to our present level.
