• Vehicle manufacturers enjoyed a pre-Christmas boom in truck, van and bus sales last month. Registrations during November leapt by almost 16% overall, according to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacture and Traders.

CV sales during the first 11 months of the year are also up by over 7%, with 294,314 vehicles registered up to the end of November.

The back-and-forth battle between Iveco Ford and Leyland Daf in the prestigious trucks and artic sector above 3.5-tonnes GVW shows no sign of abating. After being edged out of the top spot by Leyland Daf at the end of September, Iveco Ford has bounced back to take the lead to the end of November with a 22.56% share, based on 12,273 vehicles sold.

Leyland Daf is still challenging hard, with a 22.37% share (12,168 trucks sold), followed Iveco Ford — back on top above 3.5-Tonnes GVW, after 11 months.

Volvo is currently enjoying a purple patch, having increased its sales during the year by over 30%. It now has a 10.6% share having sold 5,763 trucks up to the end of November.

Renault Truck Industries retains its fifth place with an 8.7% share of the market (4,760), followed by Scania with 4.9% (2,697) and MANVW with 4.5% (2,434).

ERF is doing particularly well: its 4.1% share above 3.5tonnes belies the fact that it has increased its registrations during 1987 by more than 50%. Seddon Atkinson has also increased its share, to 3.02% (1,643), while Foden is holding steady at 1.2% (655).

During the first 11 months of the year the trucks and artic sector has grown by 7.2% to 54,383, and the importers' share has risen to more than 41%.

In the panel van sector between'1,800kg-3,500kg, Ford is the runaway leader with a 42% stake. Up to the end of November it sold 51,369 Transit panel vans.
