• The use of dump trucks to carry pig iron c the public road led to Stoneled (South Bank) of Cottingham being ordered to pay 21,500 fines and costs by the Grimsl magistrates last week.

Stoneledge denied four offences of using vehicles wh. a higher rate of vehicle exdsi duty was payable. It admitter three offences of causing and permitting the trucks to be driven by unqualified drivers, and one offence of using a vehicle without an 0-licence.

Prosecuting for the North Eastern Traffic Area, Stephe; Baggott said the case involve the transport of pig iron from ship in Immingham Docks to two sites belonging to Humberside Sea and Land Services. Two Moxy and twc Volvo dump trucks had been seen on the road carrying pig iron by a senior traffic examiner. Two of the vehicle were taxed at the works truc rate; two were not displaying any excise licence at all.

Jeremy Hopkinson, managi director of Humberside Sea and Land, said Stoneledge ha been asked to assist when HSLS was unable to obtain sufficient vehicles to unload t: ship from its usual pool of transport. The nature of the operation, and the fact that ti vehicles would be required tc go on to the public road, was explained to Stoneledge.

Stoneledge managing director, Robert Harrison, sa the company was in the business of hiring out equipment — it did not prole to be a haulage contractor. H had been asked by Humbersi Sea and Land to supply about half-a-dozen steel-bodied durr trucks.

Humberside Sea and Land was aware that Stoneledge di not have such vehicles and Harrison arranged for the crc hire of the vehicles from four other companies. He had not contracted to move the pig iron. He had merely acted as go-between.

The magistrates found the vehicle excise licence offence proved. They fined the company 21,150.
