"Coal Merchant and Furniture Remover" writes Having

been a subscriber to your journal since its publication, I am writing to ask you for your advice as to width of tyre. My wagon is a 3-ton one, and the present wheels are 3ft. at back, width 54in., and aft. 6in. at front, width din. I have enclosed you photo of same for you to give me advice as to its weighing. As the roof is removable, and also has x6 sheets of tin to prevent the sparks catching it, would you advise weighing without roof ? The weight of wagon is now 3 tons i9cwt. 561b. I have written to the County Clerk for information, but I did not get any reply on the subject of width of tyre wheels. I want to ask you one more question. It is as to where I have to write for the wagon to be weighed, whether to our own Town Clerk or the County Clerk, when I am ready."-Reply : The width of tyres will depend upon the maximum load you carry. In any event, you will need to alter all four wheels. Under the recent Heavy Motor Car Order no iron tyre may be less than sin. wide, so you will require to change your front tyres to that size as a minimum, and these will be sufficient for a aft. Gin, wheel, so long as the load on the front axle never eiceeds 3i tons. Assuming that you never carry a bigger load than 3 to 3i -tons of goods on the wagon, it is possible that your back axle load will never exceed 6 tons. in that event, with wheels 3ft. in diameter, you must have 8in. tyres, but it is better for you to declare a sufficiently large axle weight to be on the safe side. If you put it at 7 tons the tyres would require to be 94in. wide for wheels of 36in. diameter. In regard to weighing, we do not think there is any occasion for you to remove the body, because you will fall well inside the maximum limits of the Act. You will require to register with the County Council, as is not a registering authority, and you should write to the Clerk of the County Council, requesting him to furnish you with a copy of the necessary form in accordance with the thiid schedule of the "Motor Car (Registration and Licensing) Order, 1903." When you get this you must fill in the particulars and send it back to the Clerk, suggesting the time most convenient to you to weigh. Before you fill in the form you should get your wagon under full load, and ascertain the weight on each axle, so as to know what to declare.

"F.J.P." (London) writes :-" Will you kindly inform me, through the columns of your valuable paper, to whom I must apply for permission to run motor omnibuses in the London police area and the City of London ; also as to the registration fees and licenses, and to whom I should address enquiries at Scotland Yard. I intend running several services of cars in London. I shall be exceedingly obliged to you if you will kindly answer these questions.

I may mention that I have taken in your paper from the first number, and I think that there is a great deal of valuable information given in its columns." Also on the same subject, " C.J:" (Muswell Hill) writes :-" Will you kindly inform me just what licenses are required for a Metropolitan motor bus, 34 seats. Police license to ply for hire, motor license, and inland revenue carriage license. The bus is a Leyland-Crossley."-Reply: Any person seeking to start a motor omnibus in London requires to address the Chief Inspector (Mr. A. Bassom), Metropolitan Police Office, Public Carriage Branch, New Scotland Yard, S.W. He will furnish such parties with full particulars and forms. The expenses of registration are-police license £2, and registration fee £1, which are not annual charges. The charges which have to be paid every year are, hackney carriage license is., and Motor Car Act license either 42 25. or ,,G3 35., according to whether the bus is below or above two tons unladen weight. It will also interest such querists to peruse the other column on this page.
