Every Motor Carrier should be acquainted with the following rules.

The attention of Contractors, Builders, Timber Merchants, Tradesmen, and other persons concerned is directed to the undermentioned provisions of the Metropolitan Streets Act, 1867 (Section 16) which provides that :— "No person shall within the Special Limits of this Act, and between the hours of Ten in the morning and Seven in the evening, except with the permission of the Commissioner of Police : Drive or conduct along any street any cart, carriage, or other vehicle laden with timber, metal, or any other article which exceeds in length 35 feet, or which protrudes more than 8 feet 6 inches behind the vehicle, or more than one foot from the sides of the vehicle.

(2) Carry in any way, along any street, any ladder, scaffold pole, or other at-tide which exceeds 35 feet in length or 8 feet 6 inches in breadth. (3) Drive or conduct along any street any cart, waggon, or other vehicle used for conveying goods or merchandise, and drawn by more than four horses. Any person acting in contravention of this Section shall for each offence be liable to a penalty not exceeding Forty Shillings." All applications for exemption from the above provisions -should be made to the Commissioner of Police of the Metro. polis, New Scotland Yard, S.W., when in all necessary and -suitable cases a permit will be granted. The following streets and parts of streets have by an order made by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, and approved by one of Her Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, on April 29th, 1897, been deemed to be within the Special Limits of the Metropolitan Streets Act, 1867, and The above provisions apply thereto. A Division.—Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, Whitehall, Whitehall Place, Parliament Street, King Street, Great George Street, Bridge Street, Victoria Embankment, Can-non Row, Derby Street, St. Margaret's Street, Parliament Square (South and West sides of), Broad Sanctuary, Princes Street, Hyde Park Corner, Wellington Place, Whitehall NCourt, Horse Guards Avenue. B Division.—Knightsbridge, from Wilton Place to Charles Street ; Brompton Road, from Sloane Street to Hans Road; Thurloe Place, from Exhibition Road to Cromwell Place; Sloane Street, from Knightsbridge to Cadogan Place ; VHton Road; Buckingham Palace Road, from Victoria Street to Belgrave Road; St. George's Place, from Hyde Park Corner to Wilton Place.

C Division.—Cranbourne Street, Coventry Street, New .Coventry Street, Piccadilly, Park Lane, New and Old Bond Streets, Conduit Street, Jermyn Street ; Shaftesbury Avenue, from Cambridge Circus to Piccadilly Circus ; Charing Cross Road, Hamilton Place, Leicester Square (North side), South Molton Street, North Audley Street, South Audley Street, Deanery Street, Great Stanhope Street, St. James's Street, Haymarket, Wardour Street.

D Division.—Tottenham Court Road, Marble Arch, Mor-timer. Street, Orchard Street, Chapel Street, Baker Street, York Place; Marylebone Road, from Euston Road to Chapel Street.

E Division.—Bow Street, Wellington Street, Long Acre, Great Queen Street, Little Queen Street, Southampton Row, -Chancery Lane, New Street (St. Martin's Lane), Southamp. ton Buildings, Aldwych, High Holborn, from Gray's Inn Road to New Oxford Street ; Strand, from West side of Temple Bar to Charing Cross; Red Lion Street, Duncannon Street, Villiers Street, King sway, Theobalds Road, Vernon Place (Bloomsbury); Chandos Street, from St. Martin's Lane to Bedfordbury ; King William Street. A and B Division.—Grosvenor Place, from Halkin Street to Hyde Park Corner; Victoria Street.

A and C Division.—Pall Mall, Pall Mall (East). A and E Division.—Northumberland Avenue.

C and D Division.—Oxford Street, Regent Street. C and E Division.—Great and Little St. Andrew Streets, St. Martin's Lane and Upper St. Martin's Lane, St. Martin's Place.

D and E Division.—New Oxford Street, Hart Street (Bloomsbury).

D and F Division.—That part of Edgware Road from Hyde Park to Church Street. D, E, S, and Y Division.—Euston Road.

E and G Division.—Gray's Inn Road. L and M Division.—London Road, St. George's Circus, Blackfriars Road; the Headway, Elephant and Castle, and the whole of the Circus in front of the Headway ; New Kent Road, from Elephant Headway to London, Chatham, arid Dover Railway Bridge.

The clause which follows has specific reference to the City of London with respect to (1), (2), and (3) above, and prior and succeeding paragraphs, which comprise Section 16, quoted fully at the commencement :— "Any bye-law, rule, order, or regulation made or to be made within the City of London and the liberties thereof that is inconsistent with this section shall be void."

It is of great importance to London hauliers that they should carefully bear in mind the last clause, as the City Corporation is often tempted to go outside it.
