Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A number of improvements are built to a batch of eight refrigerated semi-trailer 3dies at present being completed by obert B. Massey and Co Ltd, Market ileighton. Yorks. Like the lightweight esign built previously by Massey, the Ddies are based on Hands' sub-frames and indem-axle running gear to give a ;mi.-frameless design. But the availability of ft. 6in. wide light-alloy sheet has allowed le use of a one-piece roof covering and dra-depth "risers" at the sides of the ne-piece floor "pan". The bodies have flush des as against an external-post design and 41ft. 8in. overall, they are the longest tamples yet built by the company.

The Hands' sub-frame in the design is jilt up from full-width 6in. x 4in. ox-section steel cross-members welded to aaped side -raves". The running gear has ir suspension and is carried on a sub-frame thich is of a sufficient length to allow the armost axle and-suspension assembly to e repositioned to give a 7ft. bogie spacing. aitially the semi-trailers will be used in artic

combinations at 32 tons gross but they are designed in anticipation of the introduction of a 36-ton artic gross limit when it is considered that a widespread bogie will be of benefit,

A one-piece under-tray covers the main sub-frame. The side edges are turned down over the raves and the body side pillars are Huck-bolted to the raves sandwiching the turned-down edges.

After the exterior cladding of the body is attached. Sin, polyurethane foam is installed in the sides and floor. In the case of the sides and front end an initial layer of lin. slab, papered on both sides for good adhesion, is installed and 4in. slab attached to it. The insulant is cut to leave fairly wide gaps in the area of structural members and these are afterwards filled with polyurethane foamed in place. Similarly, the cant-rail channel is filled with foamed plastics.

Externally, the body has 3ft. 10in. wide. 16 swg alloy panels double-riveted to the pillars and double-Huck-bolted to the side raves. The inner wall is of the same thickness alloy but is in one piece while the under-floor pan, the floor top covering which extends 8in. up the body sides and the roof panel are of 20 swg alloy.

The roofs for the bodies are fabricated in one piece away from the main body. Sin. polyurethane being glued to the roof sheet and reinforced plastics laid-up on it with timber battens for attaching roof ducting that is incorporated in the finished body.

Overall dimensions of the semi-trailers are 8ft. 2.5in. wide by 41ft. 8in. long and maximum overall height when coupled will be 12ft. 6in. Interior dimensions are 7ft. 2in. wide by 6ft. 10in. by 40ft. 8in. long. Petter Thermo-King PCL 50 mechanical refrigeration units are specified and the air blast is directed into wide trunking running almost the full length of the roof. Outlets spaced along the sides of the trucking and in the bottom face provide for proper distribution of the cold air.

It is calculated that the body will provide a thermal efficiency of 80 per cent with an estimated heat leakage of 57 btu Aar /deg F.
