Novel Application of Lattice-girder Construction in Park Royal Passenger Bodies

• NUMBER of interesting features

A is to be found in the methods of

body construction employed by Park Royal Coachworks, Ltd., Abbey Road, London,N.W.10. Amongst the most recent of these are, first, the use of light aluminium-alloy cross-girders for bracing the intermediate roof and carrying the upper-deck teats in side-gangway buses, and, secondly, the application of the lattice-girder principle to wheel-arches.

As will be seen from an accompanying sketch, the wheel-arch is hung from the deep waist-rail which is supported on the main pillars, these being carried by the usual floor bearers. No heavy bottom sides of the orthodox type are employed, but light longitudinal floorsills between the bearers are used as su bstitutes.

The points of suspension are at the centre and the two ends of the arch,

but the strength of the structure lies, generally, in the use of a girder-like framework of which the upper member is formed by the waist-rail and which is braced by two diagonals diverting the upper load to the cross-bearers immediately infront of and. behind the wheel-arches.

To prevent dust, etc., from the nearside rear wheel from blowing on to the platform, the maximum available clearance is allowed behind the rear of the tyre, and the back of the mudguard is swept backwards tangentially so that air currents may be conducted to the off side of the rear platform by a deflecting-curtain of rubberized fabric which hangs diagonally across the underside of the platform.

The novel feature of the upper-deck construction is the employment of a series of light, lattice-girder castings which bridge transversely the space between -two deep longitudinal members, that on the oft side, which forms the left-hand side of the gangway, being suitably supported on the front and

rear -bulkheads. These girders carry the intermediate roof, there being no hoopsticks of the usual type, and simultaneously give support to the scats on the top deck. This construction is, of course, required only on double-deckers which have sunken side gangways, and are of low overall height.

Park Royal Coachworks, Ltd., produces both public-service vehicles and de. luxe-type coaches, and a coach built on somewhat novel lines is at present being demonstrated and will probably be exhibited at the forthcoming Glasgow Show.

Visitors to the works should not miss the opportunity for inspecting the excellent system of universal scaffolding employed in the shops. On each sideof every appropriate bay, at intervals of about three yards, are movable uprights provided with a number of fixed pegs projecting on each side, these being used as steps, and providing supports for special hooked brackets with .planks attached thereto. The structure serves as a scaffolding, adjustable to any height, for the men -working on the vehicles.
