nISAPPOINTMENT at the lack or a " systems " approach to goods vehicle design in the exhibits at Earls Court; a forecast that the small, highspeed diesel with turbocharging and automatic transmission is bound to come; and a criticism of current goods vehicle chassis basic layout, especially in forward-control types where the crew's quarters are cramped and subject to engine noise and heat—these are among the provocative points made in a review of vehicle engineering published in the first issue of the new Temple Press monthly journal Engine Design and Applications, out this week.
Other contents of No. 1 issue (which supersedes Oil Engine and Gas Turbine) include a description of Leyland's opposed-piston Chieftain tank engine, discussions on the design of earthmovers, a feature on crankshaft repairs, tabulated engine specifications, and reviews of new equipment and components.
