NEWS IN BRIEF

Grimsby/Cicethorpes to Lease: Grimsby and Cleethorpes joint transport committee has decided to acquire more buses this year by leasing them from a finance house instead of borrowing money outright to purchase the vehicles. It was pointed out that the method effected a saving to the committee; there was, however, a chance of new legislation being introduced to stop such a scheme being operated, in which case the buses would be bought in the normal way. London Transport Safety Awards: More than 11,000 London Transport drivers, and more than 12,000 conductors qualified last year for awards made by R.O.S.Co. Driving awards totalled 9.009 for central bus drivers, 1,937 for country bus and coach drivers and 234 for drivers of lorries, vans and other vehicles. The highest awards for 1963 were four 40-year Gold Crosses, all to central area busmen. These have been gained by Mr. R. Curtis, of Muswell Hill garage; Mr. C. W. Hunt, of Croydon garage; Mr. C. J. Tickner, of Sutton garage and Mr. T. C. Young, of Bromley garage. Mr. Tickner and Mr. Young have subsequently retired. Three central area busmen qualified for 39-year

emblems and five 38-year awards were gained. In the country area, which entered the competition later than the central buses, the best performance was put up by a Northfleet driver, Mr. C. E. Foreman, who qualified for a 36-year award. London Transport conductors became eligible for awards for the first time" in 1961, in the Conductors' Award of Merit Competition.

Panoramic Hinton Embassy : Because of an error in our September 18 issue, the additional cost of the Plaxton Embassy body on Bedford SB chassis when. Panoramic-type fixed windows are fitted was quoted as £215. The cost is, in fact, £125, including the forced ventilation system.

Scottish Shortage : Because of a shortage of platform staff at its Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire depots, the Central S.M.T. Co. has launched a recruiting drive in Ireland; the initial target is about 200 drivers and conductresses. Glasgow Corporation, too, has an acute shortage and among its 800 immediate vacancies are more than 400 for drivers.

Omnibus Society President: The President of the Omnibus Society for 1965 is to be Mr. R. M. Robbins, chief commercial and public relations officer, London Transport Board.
