The Comets have van bodies Incorporate 32 kVA. generators to supply current to the X-ray equipment, and compressors for the operation of film-processing units. The trailers are mounted on four twin wheels and each lowbody is divided into two compartments —one an X-ray cabin and the other a and dark room.

Tents can be erected around the trailer to form dressing rooms and office space. The bodies were constructed by Samuel Elliott and Son, Ltd., Reading.

The object of the research is to establish safe limits of dustiness in which men may work without risk. The true prevalence of pneumoconiosis in coalfields will be determined and radiological surveys of the men workin 24 selected pits will be made every two years. One of the mobile units will be based at-Edinburgh and the other at Cardiff.

The scheme, in which the vehicles play an important part, is the most ambitious attempt yet made to solve the problem of pneumoconiosis and will extend over at least 10 years.
