will be pitted against that of an American tractor of lower initial cost. The Leyland model is the Beaver, equipped with an oil engine and having left-hand control. It will be attached to a semitrailer carrying a 2,537-gallon petrol tank, made of a high-tensile steel called Davalloy, which is only 20 per cent.

heavier than aluminium. A similar type of trailer has also been fitted to the American product, and it is expected that each outfit will cover approximately 75,000 miles a year. It may be some years before the final results of the experiment are available. The Stop-Start—a New Goodyear Tyre.

The Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., announces the introduction of a new type of commercial-vehicle tyre, known as the Stop-Start. It has been specially developed for use on commercial vehicles engaged in town work, where constant stopping and starting are the rule, or for vehicles working on rough and hilly country roads where speed is not a factor of importance.

As will be seen from the accompanying illustration, the tread is plainer in design and the shoulders have deepercut notches to dissipate the heat that is generated. The upper shoulder of the tyre gives the effect of two nonskid treads, so that, even when the tread is worn smooth, one of these rows of notches remains. In addition, the non-skid portion of the tyre is claimed to be 30 per cent', deeper than in standard tyres.

This is the fourth commercialvehicle tyre which the company has developed, and it is the result of extensive research and survey of the operating conditions associated with certain classes of transport. Each of the four Goodyear tyres is designed for a specific kind of service.
