" rrillE MOTOR MANUAL," now

in its 27th edition, which was introduced at the beginning of the motoring movement, can fairly claim to be the most popular all-round handbook on motoring. It is a book that should be in the possession of every prospective motorist as it gives in a very concise and readable form considerable information on the construction and management of a car, and much indispensable general data relating to its operation and upkeep and maintenance.

Of the 18 chapters included in the hook, the first live cover the constructional features and principles of operation. All forms of up-to-date engines are dealt with, including the latest developments in valve gear, eight and twelve-cylinder engines, superchargers, cooling arrangements, lubrication and carburation systems. Then follow eections on clutches, gearboxes, transmission, rear axles, free-wheel transmission, differential gears and brakes,

included in the latter being references to the latest servo systems. The control arrangements of a car are fully treated and the principles of steering gear and springing systems, including independent springing are lucidly explained and illustrated.

The chapters treating with the ignition system and electrical lighting and starting equipment, have been rewritten and re-illustrated, and then follows a new section on types of bodywork and equipment.

The maintenance of a car has of recent years been greatly simplified and the essential routine work is well explained, as also are the best methods of cleaning a car and of ensuring a good appearance of the bodywork. It has not been overlooked that the beginner in motoring wants reliable advice on the choice of a car and, particularly in the case of a second-hand car, wishes to know how to judge its condition.

There is a technical section for the

more advanced motorist who wants to know something about formula!, mechanical equivalents, definitions, how horse-power is measured, the meaning of wind-resistance, tractive effort, engine rating and cubic-capacity calculations.

Every motorist must, in his own interest, have a knowledge of the essential features of the law as it concerns motoring, and he -will find in "The Motor Manual" a comprehensive chapter on the subject.

The concluding section of the handbook consists of a very useful glossary of motoring terms, technical and general, 'alphabetically arranged.

It is confidentally expected that this new and 27th edition of "The Motor Manual" will prove to be the best edition yet isued.
