Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Vulcan Company's Latest Production, Which is Eminently Suitable for Use in Growing Rural Districts, WITH the completion of many new " housing schemes, which have been under way for some time past, and the opening up of new residential areas in

more or less undeveioped country on the fringes of big centres of population, there naturally follows an increasing demand for efficient passenger transport

to link up these scattered areas, not only with the actual business centre, but also one with the other.

Although, in many instances, the traffic is not at. present sufficiently large to justify the inauguration of services with large-capacity vehicles, there is a decidedly promising field of employment, for tlie smelter type of bus which corn

hines the essential features of speed and comfort. To assist in meeting these requirements the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co. (1906), Ltd., of Southport,„ have just introduced the new design of bus Which is illustrated on this page. As the picture shows, the new vehicle is built on exceptionally pleasing lines and incorporates features whicn render it eminently suitable for usein mealareas. Moreover, it is being Marketed at a figure which should attract many municipalities not in a position to embark on pretentious passenger transport schemes.

The new bus is a 14-seater and the body is mounted on the standard 30-cwt. Vulcan chassis, although for .high-class service, where it is desired to give even greater comfort, the makers' 2-ton chassis is employed. We will confine ourselves to a brief description of the bus in which the former chassis is used.

The chassis itself has as it outstand.ing characteristics a four-cylinder engine , with a bore and stroke of 90 mm. and 130 mm., a Ferodo-faced cone clutch, a four-speed-and-reverse. gearbox and a worm-driven rear axle.

The ,bodV seatis seven .passengers on each side a a Central gangway, the seats beingfitted with-detachablecushions-andbackrests. .The framework is built up . of , ash, as is usual, 'and, is reinforeed with body plates. The roof is or somewhat unusual design . for a .vehicle intended for regular service, and is of the clerestory .patiern. The raised portion of the. roof has three small windows on e.eels side, the centre lights .being hinged to provide adequate. ventilation for the interior in conjunction with the louvres above the windows on each side. The roof is covered with moleskin, the edges being finished 'with water moulding, and on each side of the central raised . portion space is left for the accommodation of passengers' luggage, rails with wire meshing being fitted to keep it safely in position.

This forro, of roof construction gives a pleasing appearance to the bus, provides

• additional natural light to -the interior, and also allows passengers ample height in the interior to move about freely. The busis; of course; of the one-man type, hut-it is provided with three doors-. Passengers eliter by a door at the-front on the near side, which has a double box-type step to ensure easy entrance

and exit. There is also an off-side door for the use of the driver, and another in the rear-body panel, which is normally locked by two tower bolts and is for emergency purposes only. Each door has . a frameless plate-glass window, which can be adjusted to fix in any position and runs in felt-lined channels in order to avoid the risk of undue rattle. There are also four large fixed windows on each side of the body. It will thus be seen that the needs of both the passengers and driver have been considered in the matter of protection.

The 30--cWt. Vulcan chassis, with the body which we have briefly described, is being marketed, complete with super cushion tyres, at £545, the price of the more expensive model, in which the 2-ten chassis-is used, being £675. Both models are certainly attractive proposi tions. .
