AVERY POWERFUL organization, known as the Yellow Cab Co., of Chicago; is making its plans for commencing operations in the chief cities of Europe. It operates 1,700 taxicabs in Chicago alone, and its annual output is 16,000 cabs A branch of the same organization is the Yellow Coach Manufacturing Co., which has a capital stock of $1,000,009, and which is now manufacturing motor coaches, its plant capacity, when corn pleted, being 6,000‘ coaches per annum. A subsidiary company, the Chicago Motor Coach Co., operates 100 motor coaches in.Chicago, and its aim is to increase this number to 650. Yet another subsidiary Company of the cab company is the Yellow Knight Sleeve Valve Engine Works; which has a. capacity of 15,000 engines per annum.

The organization is represented on this side of the Atlantic by the Yellow Cab Manufacturing Co., of England, Ltd., of 173-175, Great Portland Street, London, 'WA, the London representative being Mr. E. Harry Lancaster.

We have already referred to the "Z" type chassis, but fuller information concerning it is now to hand. It has been designed (1) to take -a double-deck busaccommodating 68 passengers, operated by a driver and conductor, and with a rear entrance and stairway to the upper deck ; (2) aa a 57-seater double-deck bus with the entrance at the front and with the stairway immediately to the rear of it and enclosed, which vehicle could be operated by oneman; and (3). -as a single-deck vehicle accommodating 29 passengers, the entrance being in front beside the driver.

We are unable to find out whether the vehicle, which is designed for left hand control, is. being built with right

hand control for this country. This information will be obtained later.

The low centre of gravity. is provided by underslinging tho springs. These springs are described as being of the

• progressive type, extra spring-leaves coming into operation as the load increases. • •

The power unit is the Knight sleevevalve engine, of particularly clean exterior, the four cylinders being 4 ins, in the hore and the piston stroke being 6 ins. The engine is always referred to as ." the engine with the 3-in, crank shaft." It .develops 40. h.p. • at 1,400 r.p.m., the maximum output being 55 h.h.p.

Other of the components are a Zenith carburetter, high-tension magnOto and four-bladed fan, lubrication being forced under pressurOto the main' bearings and

connecting rods, A hot-spot is introduced into the induction pipe. Provision is made for a generator in a vary accessible position, and a self-starter can also be fitted.

The power is taken through a. threespeed silent chain or a four-speed spur. gear-type of gearbox, the former type being recommended for service in cities where no severe gradients have to be encountered, because it makes for greater silence.

The gearbox is mounted just behind the central cross-member of the frame, so thata long forward clutch shaft with universal joints at both ends is interposed between the clutch and the gear. box. irons the latter, the drive is taken by the propeller shaft to an underslung worm-driven back axle.

The vehicle is mounted on cast-steel wheels equipped with 34-in. by 5-in. solid tyres, or 34-in. by 6-in, semipneumatic tyres.

The frame is deep in section, viz., 10 ins., its flange width varying from 3 ins. to 4 ins., and being rolled froth steel. Two of the Cross-members, one in front of the gearbox and one between., the gearbox and,the rear axle,

are large-diameter tubes, suitably bracketed to the frame:. ••

The general dimensions areWheelbase, 16 ft. ; front-wheel track, 5 ft. 11 ins.rear-wheel track, 6 ft. •14 ins. ; overall 'length, 23 ft.. 7 ins. ' length from dash to rear of frame, 19 rt.6 ins ;height from top of frame to ground, 1 ft.. I11 ins. ; turning radius, 34 ft. The overall length of the complete vehicle with the, body mounted is 27 ft. 6 ins.' and its width 7 ft: 10 ins., the length of the tipper deck of the double-deck bus being 23 ft. 9 ins.; whilst the platform is 3 ft. 9 ins.
