by Brendan Bolan Threatened disruption at Dublin Port by 22 hauliers has been postponed to allow mediation to take place.

At Issue are eight acres of land in the port where six tenants and 16 sub-tenant hauliers are based.

Dublin Port Company has told the hauliers the land is needed to build the port tunnel, but it has failed to offer alternative premises. Last week the hauliers threatened to simulate what would happen if they have to leave their yards. "We are very upset at the way things are going," says spokesman Shay Treston. It would be illegal for is to block the port. But we are going to take all our equipment on to the roads to show what would happen if we were evicted."

Hauliers who looked at alternative land on the M50 ring road west of the city report that it would cost 1611.5m per acre which, they say, is too expensive to contemplate. Instead they have suggested a land swap by the Port Company with the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board.

MDHB bought Dublin-based !marl in July and now owns land on both sides of the port. The hauliers have suggested that they could move to a 12-acre site in the port area which is currently used for container storage.
