THE South Eastern Traffic Commis' sioners at Hastings last week turned down two applications for licences to run coach excursions from Warrior Square, St. Leonards.

Mr. W. Penry-Davey, for Hastings Coachways Ltd., said the applications related to the carriage of passengers from Hastings to Dover and vice versa on extended Continental tours, and the carriage of passengers from Hastings to Folkestone or Hastings to Lidd Airport, for day trips to the Continent, run from Folkestone and the airport respectively.

He said the directors of Hastings Coachways Ltd. were Mr. and Mrs. Hirst who were also in business as Hirst Travel Services. Hirst Travel Services for the past two years had organized Continental tours for coaches owned by Hastings Coachways Ltd. to travel from Dover to various parts of the Continent.

The Hirst Travel Services tours left Hastings and crossed from Dover on the car ferry. From Dover they used Hastings Coachways coaches.

Owing to the Road Traffic Act 1960, passengers on thesn tours could not be carried between Hastings and Dover by Hastings Coachway coaches and coaches hired from the East Kent Road Car Co. Ltd. were used. This led to difficulties, including the transfer of luggage from one coach to another.

Mr. Penry-Davey said, with regard to the second application, that he could give an assurance that the day trips to Folkestone were only for people travelling to the Continent.

The two applications attracted objections from a total of nine established operators of Continental tours, as well as from the British Transport Commission.

The chairman, Mr. H. J. Thom, announcing the decision to reject the applications, said that in cases like these, it wanted evidence of the need for what the application sought to do. There were ample facilities already available for passengers to get from Hastings to Dover, Folkestone and Lydd, and there was not a shred of evidence to show that people could not conveniently. and comfortably 'get to these places.
