MR. W. SEMPLE, service superinten, dent of Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., was elected a city councillor in the recent municipal elections at Birmingham, Ma. L. C. Row, works manager of Leyland Motors, Ltd. (Chorley branch), for over 20 years, was presented with a cheque from the staff on October 31, on leaving to take up less arduous work for health reasons.

Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd., 2 and 3, Norfolk Street, Strand, London, W.C.2. Since October, 1940, he has been in the R.A.O.C. and R.E.M.E., where he rose to the rank of major.

MR. E. W. Witrrmlo, Assistant Director of the R.H.O. (Operation), has resigned from the M.O.W.T., to resume control of his own business. MR. F. W. JONES, Assistant Director (Vehicles), will, in future, be responsible also for the duties formerly undertaken by Mr. Whiting.

MR. THOMAS S. JAMS, who has been on the staff of the Liverpool Cart and Motor Owners' Association for 131 years, has been appointed secretary of the Liverpool No. 1 Sub Area (Liverpool Cart and Motor Owners' Association) of the R.H.A. The position was rendered vacant by the death of Mr. Allen Walter.

MR. G. BRAGG, who, since 1931, has been in charge of sales for Commer Cars, Ltd., will, in future, control the sales of both Commer and Karrier vehicles. As a result of this change, MR. G. STRATTON, who joined Karrier Motors, Ltd., in 1926 and, since 1939, has been sales manager of that. company, will assume the position of municipal sales manager to both -companies.

MR. 1. GR EENWOOD and MR. W. M ARSDEN, storekeeper and coachbuilder respectively, of the motor

engineering concern of Thomas Greenwood's Sons, Ltd., Horton Street, Halifax, which is a main agent for Austin commercial vehicles, were recently the recipients of presentations on the occasion of a dinner held by the company to mark their retirement. The presentations were made by the govern ing director, Mr. P. F. Swain. Mr. Greenwood joined the concern in September, 1902, and, but for a fiveyear break in the 1914-1918 war, has served with it for 43 years. Mr. Marsden joined the company in-1925.

MR. F. G. Smarr, M.I.A.E., F.I.M.T.. has resigned his position as Director of Vehicle Maintenance at the M.O.W.T., as from October 31. He was appointed Repairs Adviser on Motor Vehicles in 1941, and in 1943 became also Director of Alternative Fuels, in which office he succeeded Sir Albert Faulkner. The work of the Directorate was to advise the Ministry on matters of policy relating to labour, spare parts, materials, equipment, premises, and generally to ensure that such facilities as were necessary and available for the maintenance of road transport were provided to the utmost extent possible.• He also supervised and directed the work of the Regional Maintenance and Certifying Officers in respect of vehicle maintenance. In 1942 he organized a team of travelling mobile workshops in charge of skilled demonstrators, to show to the industry the latest techniques and materials available for reconditioning worn and damaged parts. He has performed a fine job, and is described by his associates at the Ministry as a "first-class colleague." Mr. Smith is managing director of F. G.
