The Camera and the Cinema in the Operation of Transit Companies.

The first operating department efficiency meeting for season 1916-17 was held on Monday, the 30th of October, in the L.G.O.C. Training School, Milman's Street, Chelsea S.W., Mr. H. E. Blain, the operating manager, presiding over an audience of about 200 officials connected with the Underground Railways, the L.G.O.C. and the Tramway Undertakings connected with the London and Suburban Group, those present including:— Messrs. Murray Griffith, director, W. E. Mandelick, secretary, A. R. Cooper, engineer, P. V. McMahon, supt. of power, W. E. Blake, supt. of the line, S. J. Webb, passenger agent, of the Underground Railways.

Messrs. G. J. Shave, engineer, J. P. Thomas, general superintendent, L.G.O.C.

Messrs. W. E. Hammond, Metropolitan Electric Tramways, A. V. Mason, South Metropolitan Tram ways, E. Wright, South 'Metropolitan Tramways, and J. B. Mackinnon, London United Tramways. An address on " The Camera and the Cinema in the Operation of Transit Companies was given by Captain A. Rosier, Superintendent of Training and Employment, L.G.O.C., who contrasted the haphazard and inefficient training in operation in the horse-vehicle days with the scientific and practical instruction which Was now being given 'to all those dealing with passenger transit. The effect of this training was clearly shown by the remarkable reductions constantly taking place in the number of accidents, notwithstanding the present abnormal difficulties in connection with street light, ing, etc.

struction was very prominent in the organization of that school, and a large number of slides and films were exhibited, including the following :— Sections, of the original educational film and slides used in the first lectures to bus drivers and con ductors. A railway film showing a trip on the District Railway. A series of slides showing some important accidents. Slides showing the advertisements and legends used in the L.G.O.C. " Safety First" Campaign. One of the latest " Safety First" films from America portraying accidents on the street railways of New York, and the new L.G.O.C. "Safety" film, intended for exhibition at cinema halls, whilst miscellaneous views were shown, inciuding :— A war film of the Naval Brigade in Belgium, in which the L.G.O.C. buses were very conspicuous. A review of the L.G.O.C. Special Constabulary. Film showing two of the T.O.T. outings for the dependents of employees at the Front. Slides of views taken in connection with Bus Ser vice No. 107, showing how the camera might be used to bring beauty spots in and around London before the public notice, with a number of photographic slides of the leading officers of the combined com panies. The evening was an exceedingly interesting one, and the thanks of the audience to the lecturer were voiced by Messrs. Murray Griffith, director. W. E. Blake, superintendent of the line, and J:. P. Thomas,

general superintendent, L.G.0.0.
