leading edge 01 commercial vehicle technology. But this year's crop of trailer builders prove that despite the present tough conditions, they're not short of chassis engineering skills or ingenuity either.

Now entering its ninth successful year, Commercial Motor's Trailer of the Year competition continues to attract the very best designs in transport engineering.

Ably supported by sponsors 3M, ArvinMeritor, Groeneveld, ICI Autocolor, Jost, Michelin and Wabco, CM'S Trailer of the Year 2002 showcases the very best in British and Continental transport system design and manufacturing.

AWARD

Our line-up of 18 finalists comprises a fascinating cross-section of the UK market, with overseas entries from firms like LAG, Legras, Krone and Stas joining traditional manufacturers like Clayton Commercials, Dennison, Transdek and United Trailers.

We also welcomed smaller trailer builders, such as SM Trailers which specialises in extremely well crafted low-loaders for combine harvesters.

Biggest surprise came from Brian Palmer Transport, in the form of a very productive insulated vegetable carrier. Local manufacturers had turned their noses up at Palmer's one-off order, so rather than be beaten, he built his own.

The engineering quality and level of operator know-how reflected in the design certainl impressed our judges. They were moved to comment that i Palmer had used a modern chassis instead of the elderly refurbished Crane Fruehauf, hE might just have shocked the eventual Bulker trophy winner.

4 CM is very grateful to Renault Trucks for loaning us a new Magnum, and to Tesco for supplying one of its Terberg DTS shunters to position the finalists. This helped our panel 01 experts (all highly experienced fleet owners, engineers or managers) to view and assess tl array of finalists to determine our category winners and overall CM Trailer of the Year, 2002. It was not an easy task...
