Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SEVERAL old-age pensioners gave evidence before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, last week, when C. G. Littlewood, Ltd., Sheffield, applied to operate a feeder service between Rotherham and Sheffield. This would connect with services from Sheffield to Torquay, Southsea, Eastbourne and Weymouth. Objections were lodged by British Railways and Rotherham Corporation.

Mr. Littlewood said he already operated a feeder for his Torquay licence, but now he wanted it to be widened to include services operated for pensioners. He had received many requests from pensioners to pick them up and set them down in the Rotherham district, as they found it inconvenient to use public transport. Pensioners from all over the Dearne Valley were using his services.

For the corporation, Mr. I. 0. Fisher, general manager, said his department were suffering from a continual drop in traffic. Last year they lost 3m. passengers, and now steelworkers were being suspended or

were working short time. He needed everything he could obtain to replace these losses Mr. T. B. Atkinson, for the railways, claimed the pensioners had a choice of good railway facilities at Rotherham. Decision will be announced later.

[Sheffield Joint Omnibus Committee operate a stage service between Rotherham and Sheffield for British Railways, who hold the licences in their name. The railways collect the receipts and pay. Sheffield Corporation for running the service, but the corporation did not support the railways' objection.]
