THE Chilean authorities have decided, according to the Chilean Press reports, to buy 300 buses for Santiago. They will be of German manufacture and the purchase will be made by the Government Corporacion de Fomento, which will deliver them to various transport concerns. These will pay the Corporacion over a long period.

In addition, 50 trolleybuses are to be bought from France.

The head of the Schneider Creuzot group, Mr. Charles Schneider, who is at present visiting Brazil, is reported to have discussed with the Governor of the State of Minas Gerais the possibility of setting up a large plant in Belo Horizonte for the manufacture of tractors and lorries.

EXPERTS STUDYING BIRMINGHAM CONGESTION

EXPERTS of Birmingham Corporalion are assessing the cost to industry of traffic congestion in the area. A survey of the DigbethDeritend road has already been made and preliminary. discussions have been conducted before a wider investigation is undertaken. A conference was held last week between corporation representatives and Mr. T. G. Usborne, head of the Ministry of Transport's classified roads division, who was visiting the city specially to study its road-contruction needs, with particular reference to Digbeth and Deritend.

He stated that there had been an• economic analysis of the congestion between these two points. This had clearly established the importance of reconstruction as soon as the Government could allocate funds. Birmingham's road problem, however, concerned the city as a whole.

NEW MECHANICAL SKIP TRUCK

THE Power Barrow, atruck which can be used over rough ground and has a turning circle of 3 ft 8 ins., is a new product of Cochrane and Co. (Shettleston), Ltd., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. It is stated that it will perform the work of four men with wheel'barrows and is simple to operate. An illustration appears on this page.

The machine is fitted with a 3 h.p. air-cooled four-stroke petrol engine and has a capacity of 12 cwt. A 10-cubic-ft. skip or 2-ft. 9-in. by 3-ft. 2-in. platform may be fitted,' both units being quickly interchangeable. The driver is seated behind the body.

The drive is transmitted through a single-dry-plate clutch to a gearbox which provides forward and reverse speeds. Gradients of 1 in 5 can be negotiated fully laden. Pneumatic tyres are fitted. The weight of the Power Barrow is 5 cwt.
