As the yoga teacher said to the archbishop,

you have to be flexible. Colin Barnett checks out a couple of truas whose flexibility greatly increases their earnings potential.

While enjoying a quiet Silverstone bacon roll at the recent HMF grabloader launch (see This Week ), the astute but amiable John All um wandered over to tell us about the latest addition to his fleet. We last encountered Allum when we drove his awesome MAN TGA 8x4 crane-equipped tractor unit (CM 25 August 2005).

The newcomer is another German; this time from Mercedes-Benz.The reason for the change is quite simple— the trusted MAN salesman switched brands and Allum followed. The basis for this one is an Axor 2633 6x4 rigid with a 7.2-litre, 322hp engine, ninespeed hydraulically assisted manual gearbox, and standard sleeper cab with air-con.

A significant part of the truck's intended work is moving generators, which usually requires a rear-mounted crane. But another role is moving portable cabins, which is best done with a front-mounted crane. The answer, provided by GB Commercial Vehicle Bodies of Wisbech, Camhs, is a reversible flatbed body with an integral crane. The body has an internal length of 7.14m, which provides space to spare for a 20ft (6.10m) ISO container, while a telescopic chassis-mounted extension allows cabins of up to 32ft (9.75m) to be carried. It is attached to the chassis by four twistlocks and four hydraulic locks at the crane end, with another four twistlocks to attach the container to the body:The headboard (or is it tailboard?) is quickly removable to accommodate overlength loads. There's room along the chassis sides for a generous number of lockers and ladder storage. The crane is a 32tm Italian Corrnach 28000E-4 twin-boom unit with a rated capacity of 2,900kg at the maximum reach of 9.60m whether front or rear mounted.

The body is parked on its integral stabiliser legs, and reversal is a simple one-man task taking just 10 minutes. Since it went into service in January cameras have been fitted behind the cab and at the rear of the chassis, making body swapping even easier.

A VBG hitch is fitted, enabling the use of a tandem trailer with a 6.63m bed able to carry another 20ft (6.10m) box, running al 42 tonnes GCW.

The Axor has just started work on a major resurfacing job at Stansted Airport which will take up to 40 nights. It is working five shifts a week, from Saturday night to Wednesday night. Two of these are with the runway closed but the other three are with it live, which makes for an interesting experience. The job entails lifting eight-tonne pre-cast concrete cable duct sections into their holes: the rear-mounted set-up is ideal for positioning directly over the excavation.
