A PROJECT DESIGNED to protect drivers carrying loads of alcohol and cigarettes has been relaunched in Scotland.

The Vulnerable Driver Scheme was originally set up almost 15 years ago, but now Scottish spirit firms are backing it in a new form.

Detective Constable Mark Galliers of Truckpol says drivers will be presented with a card to show to anyone claiming to be a police officer. "All you're doing is presenting a card saying, 'I'm not going to open the doors until [see some identification,— he explains. "They are saying for the driver to ring the base and for the base to ring the local police."

Until now, firms were left to develop their own cards.

Police are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of drivers subjected to brutal attacks during hijackings in which criminals sometimes pose as police officers.

The scheme is similar to the Dangerous Load Scheme, which covers operators carrying loads such as chemicals or hazardous materials.
