Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Birmingham haulage firm has been fined £7,000 after battery acid spilled from one of its skip trucks as it drove along the M6, dissolving part of the road surface.

Last week flexdart of Water Orton, near Birmingham, appeared before Warrington magistrates and pleaded guilty to two charges brought under the Environment Protection Act.

Tracey Shaw. prosecuting. described how a clear liquid was spotted leaking from a skip being carried by one of Flexdart's trucks near Lymm, Cheshire, on 2 January 1999. When police officers stopped the truck, which was carrying eight tonnes of car batteries, they found the skip was rusty and holed.

The court heard that when police officers looked down at the road surface it was bubbling where it had been in contact with the acid.

Flexdart, which was taking the batteries to be recycled in Wakefield, was also ordered to pay £1,186 costs.
