Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Amanda Bradbury • The Labour Party claims to have evidence that police and Department of Transport agency spending cuts have made roads more dangerous.

Shadow Transport Minister Joan Walley claims that: Police support for roadside vehicle inspections has been withdrawn, weakening enforcement of safety regulations (see story page 9); U Inspections will be made simply to improve the statistics; Li Weighbridges are unreliable; 1:1 Enforcement targets have not been met.

"The Government has made efficiency savings with no regard for the serious effects these cutbacks will have for safely on our roads," says Walley.

"Even worse, nothing but pure cynicism is driving the productivity rate for inspections. Latest instructions from the Department reveal that where the number of inspections is found to be well below target, inspections for the sake of inspections will be done just to show targets are being met. Road safety inspections should have nothing to do with meeting targets but they should be planned and targeted to catch cowboy operators."
