Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In a bid to increase the number of roadside checks the Government has requested national figures on the number of checks organised by the Vehicle Inspectorate which had to be cancelled through lack of police support.

The request results from meeting between the Home Office, Department of Transport and Association of Chief Police Officers. Police forces are due to supply the figures before a second meeting on 31 March.

The VI and local authorities want the power to stop vehicles at the roadside. However police forces want to retain the sole right to stop vehicles for security reasons.

The VI says enforcement is suffering because the lack of police back-up is leading to the cancellation of multi-agency checks and VI checks. The police say they want to help but are being held back by lack of

funds. The Kent force has admitted that up to 70% of multi-agency checks have been cancelled because of a cash shortage.

ACP° is believed to be chal

lenging earlier figures produced by the VI for a parliamentary question which stated that 300 hours a month are lost nationally when police pull out of checks already in progress.
