Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

More than 80% of hauliers have difficulty in recruiting good quality drivers—and the problem is going to get worse, according to a new survey. The Road Haulage Distribution Training Council warns that the industry is facing up to a major skills shortage in the next five years. Most of the 600 operators who replied to the RHDTC questionnaire stressed the need For drivers to acquire skills in defensive driving, customer and vehicle care, and legal requirements.

RHDTC business development manager Ian Hetherington says: "Almost all the respondents stated they anticipated having problems recruiting well trained staff in the future." Respondents also said the industry needs to develop skills in the areas of information technology, planning and European business development. • Copies of the survey, The Labour Market in the Road Haulage and Distribution industry, are available from the RHDTC at £22.
