AFTER pleading guilty to a total of 41 charges concerning the use of a forged licence disc, the use of a C vehicle for general haulage, and failing to have the correct insurance cover, Ernest Frank Chilton, Riverdale, Blythe Bridge, nr. Stafford, was fined £34 and ordered to pay costs of £26 5s. at the Uttoxeter Magistrates' Court last week.

Mr. A. Till, prosecuting, said that Chilton had owned two vehicles under C licences. On several occasions during 1961 he had used these units to carry general haulage for many industrial concerns. They had not been covered by the proper insurance policies to enable them to do this type of work. In respect of these offences Chilton faced 39 charges.

On one occasion a vehicle belonging to the defendant had been stopped by a police constable when it was bound for Southampton. It showed an A-licence identity disc which, Mr. Till alleged, was a forgery, and the driver produced records showing that it had been carrying general goods over a wide area. Later Chilton had been cautioned by a traffic examiner from the West Midland Traffic Area, and he admitted that the disc was forged.

About six months previously, said Mr. Till, Chilton had gone to Measham to buy a new vehicle. Here he had met a man who offered him a lorry, complete with A-licence disc, for E700. He paid cash and brought the vehicle home. From this time he had used it for hire and reward work. Of course, his insurance docurn ents only covered him for C-licensed operation.
