Bridlington firm of coach operators, Messrs. Anfields, were accused of running express carriages without licences. For the prosecution it was stated that an unlicensed service had been operated from Driftield aerodrome to York and Leeds over a number of years.
The system was that R.A.F. personnel going on week-end leave went to an office at the camp and booked a ticket. The coro....al in the office made out a list of passengers and telephoned Messrs. Anfields, either late on Friday evening or on Saturday morning, giving the number of passengcl-s wishing to
travel. The requisite number of coaches was then provided.
For Messrs. Anfields it was stated that this practice was general throughout the country. The traffic had to be provided for and existing services were inadequate, because of the limitation of time. Vehicles picked up Servicemen in Leeds and York at midnight and later in order to get them back to the camp.
The firm had applied for a licence and would now seek a dispensation to enable the work to be carried on until a hearing was arranged. The charges against Messrs. Anfields were dismissed on payment of £9 costs.
