Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IF 8,800,000 service miles operated Jby the Midland General Omnibus o., Ltd., only 700,000 were showing a -oft, said Mr, F. A. Stockdale, outling the concern's case for higher res to the Yorkshire Licensing AuthoI at Sheffield last week. Early in the taring, Mr. Stockdale pointed out that is application was probably only the st, for the figures to be presented were sed on costs last October, and estiites made at that time took no count of increases which had since curred.

No new vehicles were to be added the fleet in the coming year, it was .ted, so that whilst depreciation on

existing 240 vehicles would be luced, maintenance costs would. rise.

1949, these were kept down 'to 7,000 and no unnecessary work had m carried out. In 1950, the British tnsport Commission had acquired Ebor Bus Co., which had been ced under Midland General control, maintenance work on the Ebor fleet I occupied the company's shops. ncreased fares now suggested-the t applied for since 1922-would duce an additional £34.847 from ;le fares and £22,615 from return :s. Singles rates would go up by id. tickets up to 41d. and by Id, there:r. Ordinary returns would be raised by Id. Workmen's returns would go up by Id. and 2d. Contract work had gone a long way towards subsidizing stage-carriage operation. In 1948-1949 this had produced a profit of £34,000, but this year it would bring in a profit of only £5,959.

Losing it a Mile Fares of the Mansfield District Traction Co. were considered at the same hearing. This company, another B.T.C. concern under Midland General control, wished to add-id. to tickets up to 4d., and .1d.. on fares from .5d. to 2s. 3d, Return tickets would be increased by id., with the omission of. the 3d, and 4d. returns, and .workmen's rates by Id. and 2d.

Mr. Stockdate said that out 'of 4,859,651 Stage-carriage miles, 4,620,627 were unprofitable. At the existing fares the loss estimated for this year would have been about id. per mile, but rising costs would make this id, per mile. Additional income from higher charges would be £41,691, minus £4,500 as a result of maintaining the 2d. workmen's ticket, to the withdrawal of which Mansfield Corporation objected. Decisions were reserved.

News of other applications for higher fares is given on page 152.
