A truck driver has been jailed for his part in a

£75,000 theft. Jennifer Ball reports.

A HAMPSHIRE driver has been jailed for a year for his part in stealing a £75,000 load of Scalextric toys, which have never been traced.

Maidstone Crown Court heard that last November Shane Fewings of Bedhampton was driving the toys from Southampton docks to Horriby Hobbies in Margate but he never arrived. The tractor minus its trailer was later found at a service area on the M2 near Gillingham.

Fewings was later arrested and admitted that the trailer was taken from the service area but he would not reveal what happened to the goods. Fewings said he needed the cash because he was in debt and his home was about to be repossessed.

Police had already discovered that Fewings was on bail awaiting trial for stealing another trailer from Hampshire in February 2004. He denied that charge but was jailed for 20 months on 13 January; the new one-year sentence will be added to his current term.

Mr Recorder John McDonald said that Fewings had a depressing record of 20 previous convictions for various offences including theft.
