Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Fast, efficient communications is a key factor at the new truck service centre just opened by Godfrey Davis (Wembley) Limited.

The centre — which covers a 6-acre site at Alperton. Middlesex, and is probably the biggest of its kind in the U.K., to operate from such a heavily built-up area — posed a number of communications problems that were essential to overcome if the repair service was to work efficiently. Among top priorities were the necessity to maintain constant contact between the 30 work bays and the spare parts department, and the need for both to be linked to the production controller's office. In addition, it was essential that senior staff, such as the site foreman, who need to move around constantly, could be contacted immediately at any time.

Godfrey Davis called in telecommunications specialists, Telephone Rentals Limited, to solve the problem. Their answer has been to instal a loudspeaker communicator system linking the work bays to both the spare parts department and the production controller's office, together with a separate staff location system using personal call pocket receivers for key staff.

The communicator system operates between two master stations — one in the spare parts department, the other in the production controller's office — and 14 sub-stations, each equipped with two-way call units. This means that one sub-station serves two work bays.

Whenever a work bay requires a particular spare part, the technician concerned simply calls the spares section, orders the item required and when the item is ready, arranges for immediate collection, In practical terms, this means that delays are reduced to the absolute minimum and the work cycle is barely interrupted.

Additional to the supply of spares to all bays whenever needed. the communicator system enables the production controller to keep in touch with all work bays to ensure that all jobs are progressing smoothly.

Although the communicator provides a fast method of communication for the inside areas, it was considered undesirable to instal the system throughout the 6-acre site as this would have meant frequent use of a broadcast system outside the workshop area when it could possibly be of nuisance value to the public. To overcome this and ensure that key personnel could be contacted at any time. Telephone Rentals have installed a 59-way encoder (master station) which is linked to a number of pocket receivers. These receivers — not much bigger than a matchbox — are simply carried in the pocket and give out an audible bleep-bleep-bleep whenever the person carrying the instrument is called. A brief message can then be passed so that the executive wastes no time in going to the bay or area where his advice may be needed.
